FEELING REWILDED

FEELING REWILDED

My first time winter bathing. What a view and how exhilarating! I’m the type who hates cold water. You can ask my lovely hubby and he’s going to be very surprised when I tell him that I went in the water three times. He’s in […]

STANDING DESK

STANDING DESK

As soon as my hubby has left for Vancouver I’m moving into his office, using his standing desk 😉 It’s hard to stand still on his squishy floor mat which is the whole point. I’m also trying out his “standing resting chair” from Focal Upright […]

MAKE EVERYTHING FROM WALKING TO DANCING MORE ENJOYABLE

MAKE EVERYTHING FROM WALKING TO DANCING MORE ENJOYABLE

I’ve previously talked about how floor sitting is very nutritious but if you’re required to sit when working, you can mix it up with sitting cross-legged on your chair. You can train yourself to sit longer and longer cross-legged. Remember to alternate between which legs are crossed in front 😉 If you can’t sit cross-legged you can then alternate between one leg up at the time.

Floor sitting however is still better as you get the extra movement every time you have to get up and down from the floor. Floor sitting and sitting cross-legged is like extending your yoga class by increasing your hip flexibility, which will reduce lower back and knee pain and make everything from walking to dancing easier and more enjoyable.

I suffered from lower back pain in my mid twenties but when I started practising yoga four hours a week for over four years my lower back pain went away. I’m pretty sure a big part of that was the increased hip flexibility that I experienced.

Since deciding to live in a couch free home two years ago and working a lot sitting on the floor, I’ve noticed how flexible my hips have become. It feels like it has happened out of the blue since I don’t go to the gym or yoga classes (at the moment) but the only thing I’ve done is change my sitting habits.

For the millions of years humans have existed, we’ve only been sitting in chairs for about 200 years. We’ve evolved to sit on the floor/ ground and frequently cross-legged. Today, in some parts of the world millions of people sit on the floor/ground and not chairs. Always sitting in a chair the same way restricts the natural movement of your hips.

Get started today by sitting cross-legged on your chair and sit in front of your couch using it as a back rest. Remember to listen to your body, change positions when your body tells you to and always stop if it hurts.

WHOLE BODY MOVEMENT

WHOLE BODY MOVEMENT

Are you getting outdoors, bare footed and moving naturally as we’ve developed to do for millions of years? Balancing bare footed strengthens muscles, ligaments and joints in your feet which travels further up your legs, knees, hips, back and neck, creating better posture and mobility. […]

ANCESTRAL MOVEMENT NUTRITION

ANCESTRAL MOVEMENT NUTRITION

Esben and I’ve been rewilding our morning and lunch with ancestral movement, sunlight, barefoot grounding/ earthing, connecting with our landscape and enjoying our lunch outdoors, sitting on a rock, watching and listening to the sound of turbulent water.

The ancestral movement that we did were bare foot walking and balancing as well as foot-hand crawling, jumping and stepping from rock to rock.

The natural sunlight boosted our vitamin D levels and our day-time hormones and the barefoot grounding suffused us with the Earth’s negative charged free electrons that equalises the accumulate positive charged free radicals that the modern world is bombarding us with.

We also enjoyed a peaceful lunch and connected with our landscape, giving us a deep feeling of belonging and a connection to the life force energy.

LUNCH BREAK & BONE BROTH

LUNCH BREAK & BONE BROTH

Lunch break walk at work turned into bone broth “fasting” This week I’ve been going for a walk in my lunch break at work around the adjacent open space and memorial park. The idea rose from my desire to get more out during the day […]

IMPROVING OUR HEALTH BY SELLING OUR COUCHES

IMPROVING OUR HEALTH BY SELLING OUR COUCHES

Selling our couches was the first step in creating a home that facilitates movement rather than a sedentary lifestyle full of furniture that creates a development-crippling environment as it inhibits natural movement. Furniture literally shapes your body!

It all arose from my interest in natural movement, specifically our movement profile on a day-to-day basis, which includes sitting, standing and sleeping positions. Look around you! Can you see how entwined and affected your movement profile is by your surroundings?

Like most modern people, I’ve developed my body to sitting in a chair, couch and other soft sitting stuff as I became more and more sedentary as I got older. This is very different to how we humans originally were sitting, on a harder and less restricting surface, the ground.

Does your back also hurt from sitting? My lower back did and I struggled for several years, however it become better when I practiced yoga a couple of times a week but what excites me about selling our couches is that my hip opening practice becomes an all day practice.

Simply sitting cross-legged on the floor is a position that opens and stretches out your hips. Many of us take yoga classes as a hip opening practice so going couch free is a great way to extend your yoga practice.

This is the reason why a couple of floor cushions that creates a slightly elevated areas will be our new seating style in our son’s room (first photo).

We love the additional space we have created by selling our couch in our living room (second photo). Now our gym rings have got a central location and our son loves to swing in our hammock style sitting option.  In addition, we’re using our bookshelf as seating option for guests and it’s also perfect for shoulder massages

I’ll keep you updated with our transition to a furniture free home so don’t miss my upcoming posts on natural movement.
