HOW MY NECK PAIN HAS DIMINISHED (part 2)

NOURISHMENT A focus on nourishment instead of dieting was the first lifestyle change that my family and I made to achieve more vitality and energy. I also believe this step as has helped heal the neck pains I frequently experienced until recently as well as the other positive side effects […]

TASTING OUR LANDSCAPE

Tasting your landscape will help you feel connected and deepen your relationship with your landscape.

What can you eat and what should you stay away from? Keep educating yourself little by little. Look up one plant that you saw on your way when you get back home. It’s also a great education for the kids.

Foraging is also a great way to work you body more for your food. Combining tasks and stacking of your life so that you get movement (walking, squatting and reaching with your arms), delicious food or snacks, the food didn’t get wasted and you don’t have to buy food packed with plastic.

Get movement into your day is key and reduce waste!

MAKE YOUR OWN SUPERFOODS

AVOCADO SEED – ANTIOXIDANT POWERHOUSE

AVOCADO SEED – ANTIOXIDANT POWERHOUSE

IMG_4132

The avocado seed is the most nutrient dense part of the fruit. You should be eating it and not throwing it out! I’m all for eating the whole food when edible but if you are worried about eating the avocado seed I encourage you to do your own research and always listen to your body’s signals. Not everything in an avocado seed might be fit for human consumption but research has found avocado pit supplementation in low dosage is non-toxic.

For centuries, avocado seeds have been used in South America to treat inflammation, diabetes, high blood pressure and gastrointestinal tract issues including gastric ulcers, constipation and diarrhea.

ANTIOXIDANTS

A study (published in Food Chemistry) has also shown that the avocado seed has much higher antioxidant activity and phenolic content than the flesh of the fruit. Over 70% of the total antioxidant capacity of avocados is found within the seed and this high level of antioxidants include catechins (also found in green tea) and procyandins, which will help keeping free radicals at bay and preventing bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

Pennsylvania State University launched a study on the benefits of avocado seeds and found that the phenolic antioxidant compounds in the seeds may lower high cholesterol, high blood pressure, reduce inflammatory conditions, diabetes, and boost your immunity. The seeds even have insecticidal, fungicidal, and anti-microbial properties. Also, Dr. Tom Wu, who has earned “Remarkable Contribution” award from the American Cancer Society and the “World Famous Doctor” award from the United Nations for his breakthroughs with diabetes and cancer, says; “any heart disease patient must eat the avocado including the seed.”

FIBERS

The antioxidants and fiber found in avocado seeds are great for your digestive system. An avocado seed contains more soluble fiber per ounce than almost any other vegetable which will keep you full and satiated.

HOW TO

Rinse and dehydrate in the oven at 120C for 2 hours.

I’ll rinse and store the avocado seeds in water in a jar in the fridge until I’ve a couple of seeds and I often do it before or after using the oven for other things. It’s less wasteful this way.

Once the seed has cooled to the touch, throw the dry outer skin in your compost bin.

Gently press a knife to the seam to pop open.

It should be soft enough for you to be able to dice the two halves but keep fingers clear.

Blitz in a blender or Thermomix until pulverised.

Store in the fridge in an airtight container and use a tablespoon at a time for your smoothies and juices.

SIMPLE STEPS TO RECONNECT WITH NATURE DURING YOUR BUSY DAY (part 1)

SIMPLE STEPS TO RECONNECT WITH NATURE DURING YOUR BUSY DAY (part 1)

IMG_3962

This post is an extension of my post THE MISSING LINK from last week, where I talk about how to reconnect with nature and rewilding your modern family for great energy, sparkling eyes and a vitality that lasts all day.

RECONNECT WITH THE NATURAL DAILY RHYTHM AND SEASONAL CHANGES.

Connecting with nature isn’t only for hippies 🙂 Study after study shows how people recover quicker when they spend time and interact with nature. Being in contact with nature doesn’t only benefit sick people but everybody. It increases their sense of well-being and reduces stress.

Make it a habit to observe the daily and seasonal changes every day and reconnect with the outdoor environment. It doesn’t take much to look outside when you’re brushing your teeth, taking a break at work, stopping at the red lights, using public transport or getting ready for bed.

  • Where is the sun in the sky?
  • When does the sun rise and set?
  • Do you know the species of the birds you see or hear?
  • Can you see the moon during the day?
  • Is the the moon full, waxing or waning?
  • Where is the moon in the night’s sky?
  • Do you recognise any stars or constellations in the night’s sky?

Today the moon has reached it’s first quarter. Tonight, I encourage you to go outside or look out the window. Can you see the moon or is it overcast? Do you see it in the northern, eastern, southern or western night’s sky?

GET SUNLIGHT ON YOUR SKIN, IN YOUR EYES AND GET GROUNDED.

It can be hard to find time during our busy day to spend time outdoors but it’s not impossible and you can start with small and easy changes to your routines and habits. Where can you make a few changes so you can spend more time outdoors?

  • Get off one stop before your normal stop and walk the extra distance
  • Park further away and walk the extra distance.
  • Take breaks outside when possible.
  • Eat your lunch in the local park.
  • Pee in your garden 😃

Other posts will be coming up covering how to;

  • Eat more organic and heirloom local produce.
  • Invite the outdoors inside.
  • Align you sleep-wake cycle with the natural rhythm.
